Details

The frient Motion Sensor Pro (MOSZB-140) is a battery-powered Zigbee PIR motion, illuminance, and temperature sensor with tamper protection. The device uses a passive infrared sensor to monitor movement within its field of view. Its nominal detection range is up to 9 metres, with a field of view of 45° both vertically and horizontally. It uses separate detection levels for occupancy status and alarm events.

The built-in light sensor measures ambient illuminance in lux, while the temperature sensor measures the room temperature. The data can be used as conditions for lighting, heating, cooling, and security automations. For example, the lighting can be configured to switch on only when motion is detected and the ambient light level is low.

The Motion Sensor Pro provides more sensor data than the standard frient Motion Sensor model: in addition to motion, it also measures illuminance and temperature, and it includes tamper protection. It operates with two replaceable AA batteries. According to the manufacturer, the expected battery life is approximately three years with reporting every two minutes.

About frient

frient is a Denmark-based company that develops and manufactures Zigbee-based smart home devices. Its product range includes door and window sensors, motion sensors, temperature and humidity sensors, air quality sensors, water leak detectors, vibration sensors, smoke and heat alarms, smart plugs, energy meters, and other smart home accessories.

frient products use standard Zigbee communication and are therefore compatible with a wide range of Zigbee gateways. They are supported by Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, ZHA, SmartThings, Homey, and many other Zigbee-based systems. Available features may vary depending on the gateway and its device support.

Key Product Features

  • PIR motion detection: The passive infrared sensor detects moving targets within its field of view whose temperature differs from the surrounding environment.
  • Detection range up to 9 metres: With suitable placement, it can also be used to monitor motion in larger rooms.
  • Two detection levels: Uses separate thresholds for occupancy status and alarm events.
  • Illuminance sensing: Measures ambient light conditions, and the illuminance data can be used in automations in compatible systems.
  • Temperature measurement: The built-in sensor measures ambient temperature between 0 and +50 °C.
  • Tamper protection: The device includes tamper protection, which can be handled as a separate alarm event in compatible Zigbee systems.
  • Adjustable occupancy timeout: When used with Zigbee2MQTT, the time after which the sensor returns to an unoccupied state following the end of motion can be configured.
  • Multiple installation options: Can be mounted on a flat wall, in a corner, or placed on a horizontal surface, and can also be fixed using double-sided adhesive tape.
  • Battery-powered operation: Uses two replaceable AA batteries.

Smart Home Protocols and Platform Compatibility

  • Zigbee: Uses low-power wireless communication. A compatible Zigbee gateway or coordinator is required.
  • Zigbee end device: Operates as a battery-powered end device and transmits its own sensor and status data to the Zigbee coordinator.
  • Home Assistant: Can be used in a local smart home system with a compatible Zigbee coordinator through Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA.
  • Zigbee2MQTT: Supported as model MOSZB-140. It handles occupancy status, tamper status, temperature, illuminance, battery level, battery voltage, LED behaviour, and occupancy timeout.
  • MQTT integration: When Zigbee2MQTT is used, sensor and status data can be transmitted through MQTT messages.
  • ZHA: Can be connected through the Home Assistant Zigbee Home Automation integration. Available entities and settings depend on current device support in the integration.
  • Samsung SmartThings: Can be used with a compatible SmartThings Zigbee hub. Availability of motion, illuminance, temperature, and tamper data depends on the device handler being used.
  • Homey: Motion, light, and temperature data can be used in flows through the frient integration.
  • Local operation: When used with Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, or ZHA and a local Zigbee coordinator, sensor data can be processed without an internet connection.

Smart Features

  • Occupancy status: The connected system displays whether the sensor detects motion.
  • Motion-based automation: Lighting, sirens, cameras, or other compatible devices can be controlled when motion is detected.
  • Motion clear handling: An automation can be triggered when the sensor reports an unoccupied state after the configured occupancy timeout has elapsed.
  • Adjustable occupancy timeout: Can be configured between 5 and 65,535 seconds in Zigbee2MQTT.
  • Illuminance display: When used with Zigbee2MQTT, ambient light can be displayed as a lux value.
  • Light-based automation: Motion detection can be combined with the illuminance value, for example to control lighting.
  • Temperature display: The measured temperature can be logged and displayed in charts.
  • Temperature-based automation: The measured value can be used as a condition for heating, cooling, or notification workflows.
  • Tamper status: In compatible systems, a tamper event can trigger a notification or security automation.
  • Status LED configuration: In Zigbee2MQTT, the LED can be disabled or enabled only for fault indication, motion indication, or both events.
  • Temperature calibration: When Zigbee2MQTT is used, an absolute correction can be applied to the measured temperature.
  • Illuminance calibration: A percentage correction of the illuminance value can be configured in Zigbee2MQTT.
  • Battery level: The remaining battery capacity can be displayed as a percentage in supported systems.
  • Battery voltage: When Zigbee2MQTT is used, the battery voltage is also available in millivolts.
  • Low battery status: The need for battery replacement can be used as a separate notification condition.
  • OTA firmware update: Wireless firmware updates are supported in Zigbee2MQTT.
