Details

The frient Electricity Meter Interface 2, LED (EMIZB-141) is a Zigbee 3.0 battery-powered optical electricity meter reader designed for energy meters with an LED pulse output. The device detects flashes from the electricity meter’s consumption indicator LED and uses them to calculate instantaneous power and total energy consumption.

The optical sensor head can be mounted directly over the electricity meter’s pulse indicator LED. Installation does not require any modification to the meter wiring. A compatible electronic electricity meter must have a visible LED pulse output with a pulse constant between 50 and 10,000 imp/kWh.

The pulse constant must be configured according to the value shown on the electricity meter. For example, if the meter is marked 1000 imp/kWh, 1000 detected LED flashes correspond to 1 kWh of energy consumption. The accuracy of the calculated data depends on correct configuration of the pulse constant and precise positioning of the optical sensor.

Measurement data can be transmitted to a compatible smart home hub over Zigbee 3.0. When used with Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, ZHA, Homey, or another supported system, instantaneous power and total energy can be logged locally, displayed in charts, and used as conditions for automations.

About frient

frient is a Denmark-based company that develops and manufactures Zigbee-based smart home devices. Its product range includes door and window sensors, motion sensors, temperature and humidity sensors, air quality sensors, water leak detectors, vibration sensors, smoke and heat alarms, smart plugs, energy meters, and other smart home accessories.

frient products use the standard Zigbee 3.0 protocol, making them compatible with a wide range of Zigbee gateways. They are supported by Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, ZHA, SmartThings, Homey, and many other Zigbee-based systems. Available features may vary depending on the gateway and its device support.

Key Product Features

  • Optical electricity meter reading: Detects pulses from the electricity meter’s consumption indicator LED without electrical contact.
  • Instantaneous power calculation: Determines current power from the time interval between consecutive LED pulses.
  • Total energy tracking: Calculates consumed energy based on the number of detected pulses.
  • Configurable pulse constant: Can be configured for electricity meters with pulse outputs between 50 and 10,000 imp/kWh.
  • Zigbee 3.0 communication: Transmits measurement data to a compatible gateway over a low-power Zigbee network.
  • Simple retrofit installation: The optical head can be mounted over the meter LED without any additional mains wiring.
  • Battery power: Operates using two replaceable AA alkaline batteries.
  • Long battery life: Expected operating time is approximately two years at room temperature with a five-second update interval.

Smart Home Protocols and Platform Compatibility

  • Zigbee 3.0: Uses low-power wireless communication. A compatible Zigbee gateway or coordinator is required.
  • Home Assistant: Can be integrated into a local energy monitoring system using a compatible Zigbee coordinator.
  • Zigbee2MQTT: The EMIZB-141 model is supported. Instantaneous power, total energy, battery level, and multiple configuration values can be managed in an MQTT-based system.
  • MQTT integration: When Zigbee2MQTT is used, measurement data can be transmitted to connected systems as MQTT messages.
  • ZHA: Can be connected through the Home Assistant Zigbee Home Automation integration. Correct configuration of the pulse constant is required for accurate measurement.
  • Samsung SmartThings: Can be used with a compatible SmartThings Zigbee hub. The range of displayed measurement data depends on the device handler being used.
  • Homey: Can be used for energy monitoring and automation tasks in Homey systems that support frient devices.
  • Local operation: When used with Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, or ZHA and a local Zigbee coordinator, measurement data can be processed without an internet connection.

Smart Features

  • Instantaneous power: The connected system can display the current load in watts.
  • Total energy: Calculated energy consumption can be logged in kWh.
  • Energy history: The selected platform can create consumption charts for daily, weekly, monthly, or custom periods.
  • Home Assistant Energy Dashboard: When the energy entity is configured correctly, total consumption can be displayed in the Home Assistant Energy Dashboard.
  • Load-based automation: Automations can be triggered when instantaneous power rises above or falls below a defined value.
  • Consumption event tracking: Changes in power can be used to detect when larger appliances switch on or off.
  • Battery level display: Supported systems can display the remaining battery level as a percentage.
  • Low battery warning: Battery replacement can be used as a separate status or automation condition.
  • Battery voltage: Supported integrations can also display the current battery voltage.
  • Initial meter reading configuration: Supported integrations allow the current reading of the physical electricity meter to be entered so that the calculated consumption value can be aligned with the meter display.
  • OTA firmware update: Wireless firmware updates can be performed in a compatible Zigbee system.

Installation

  • Check the electricity meter: The meter must have a visible LED pulse output and a stated imp/kWh value.
  • Connect the sensor: Insert the optical sensor cable into the appropriate connector on the device.
  • Position the optical head: Mount the sensor head precisely over the electricity meter’s consumption indicator LED.
  • Prepare the surface: Clean dust and grease from the meter surface before attaching the sensor.
  • Configure the pulse value: Enter the imp/kWh value shown on the electricity meter in the Zigbee system.
  • Pairing: After inserting the batteries, place the device in Zigbee pairing mode and add it to the compatible gateway.
  • Verify operation: Switch on a larger electrical load to check whether the system detects the LED pulses and whether the displayed power value changes.

Additional Features

  • Compatible electricity meters: Can be used with electronic energy meters that have a visible consumption-proportional LED pulse output.
  • Optical sensor head: Can be attached with adhesive directly over the meter LED.
  • Configurable pulse constant: The imp/kWh value can be adjusted to match the specification of the electricity meter being used.
  • Load-dependent update rate: At higher power levels, the electricity meter LED flashes more frequently, so the instantaneous power value updates more quickly.
  • Sensor positioning: Accurate placement of the optical head affects reliable pulse detection.
  • Ambient light: Proper shielding of the sensor reduces the risk of false pulse detection caused by external light.
  • Meter cabinet placement: A metal meter cabinet and greater building structure distance may reduce Zigbee communication range.
  • Zigbee network extension: Installing a mains-powered Zigbee router can improve communication between the electricity meter and the coordinator.
  • Platform-dependent configuration: Configuration of the pulse constant, initial meter reading, and energy entities depends on the Zigbee gateway and integration being used.
