Details

Aqara Spatial Multi-Sensor FP400 (PS-S05E / PS-S05D) is a 60 GHz mmWave radar-based presence, position, and illuminance sensor supporting Zigbee and Matter over Thread communication.

In addition to detecting the presence of people in a room, the FP400 also tracks their real-time position and direction of movement. It can simultaneously track up to 10 targets, and the monitored area can be divided into up to 8 custom zones. Each zone can provide its own presence status, allowing a single sensor to monitor multiple separately defined areas.

The 60 GHz mmWave radar can detect both stationary and moving people. AI-based processing helps reduce interference caused by environmental factors such as fans, robot vacuum cleaners, moving curtains, plants, and pets. The device also supports configurable interference sources and area boundaries, which can be used to reduce the effect of reflective surfaces and other interfering objects.

The FP400 can be used in either Zigbee or Matter over Thread mode. In Zigbee mode, an Aqara Zigbee gateway is required, while Matter over Thread operation requires a Matter Controller and a Thread Border Router. After configuring the zones in the Aqara app, the device can expose one general presence sensor, up to 8 separate zone presence sensors, and the built-in illuminance sensor to Matter systems. The device operates from a 5 V DC, 1 A USB-C power supply.

About Aqara

Aqara manufactures smart home devices, sensors, camera-based and standalone gateways, switches, relays, lighting controllers, motorized shading devices, thermostats, smart locks, and other building automation accessories. Its product range includes devices using Zigbee, Thread, Matter, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth communication.

In addition to Aqara's own Aqara Home/Aqara Life ecosystem, many products can also be used with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, Home Assistant, and other smart home platforms. Matter and Thread support is playing an increasingly important role in newer Aqara products, while many Zigbee devices can also be exposed to third-party Matter systems through compatible Aqara Matter hubs.

Key Product Features

  • 60 GHz mmWave radar: Uses millimeter-wave radar sensing to track people's presence, position, and movement.
  • Tracking of up to 10 people: Can simultaneously track the real-time position of multiple people. For best separation, the manufacturer recommends approximately 1 meter or more between individuals.
  • 8 custom detection zones: The monitored area can be divided into up to 8 separate zones, each with its own presence status and automation conditions.
  • AI Enhanced Person Detection: AI-based person recognition can reduce false detections caused by pets, robot vacuum cleaners, moving toys, and other non-human targets.
  • AI Spatial Learning: The device can learn the room's radar background and adapt to glass, metal, mirrors, and other highly reflective surfaces.
  • Interference source management: Areas containing fans, air conditioners, plants, curtains, and other moving objects can be marked as interference sources.
  • Area boundaries: Walls, mirrors, large glass surfaces, and other reflective objects can be defined as boundaries to reduce ghost targets caused by reflections.
  • Illuminance sensor: Ambient light measurement data can be used as a condition in lighting automations.
  • IPX5 protection: The enclosure is protected against water jets from any direction.

Smart Home Protocols and Platform Compatibility

  • Zigbee: In Zigbee mode, the device connects to the Aqara system through an Aqara Zigbee gateway.
  • Thread: The device supports Thread wireless communication.
  • Matter over Thread: In Matter mode, communication takes place over a Thread network. A compatible Matter Controller and Thread Border Router are required.
  • Bluetooth: The manufacturer's specifications also list Bluetooth communication. This is primarily used as part of network configuration and pairing.
  • Aqara Home / Aqara Life: The detection map, zones, boundaries, interference sources, sensitivity, AI functions, and other detailed parameters can be configured in the Aqara app.
  • Apple Home: Can be integrated using Matter over Thread. In Zigbee mode, it can also be exposed through a compatible Aqara Matter hub.
  • Google Home: Can be added to a Matter-compatible Google ecosystem using a suitable Matter Controller and Thread Border Router.
  • Amazon Alexa: Can be integrated into a Matter-compatible Alexa system if the hub supports the required Matter and Thread functions.
  • Samsung SmartThings: Can be used in a compatible SmartThings system via Matter over Thread.
  • Home Assistant: Can be integrated into a Home Assistant Matter environment as a Matter over Thread device with a suitable Thread Border Router. The entities actually exposed depend on the Matter implementation.
  • Matter zones: After prior configuration in the Aqara app, up to 8 zones can be exposed to the Matter platform as separate presence sensors in addition to the overall presence sensor and illuminance sensor.
  • Zigbee-to-Matter Bridge: In Zigbee mode, it can be exposed to a third-party Matter system using a compatible Aqara Matter hub, such as the Hub M3.

Smart Features

  • Whole-area presence detection: Provides a separate status indicating whether anyone is present within the monitored area.
  • Per-zone presence detection: Each of the up to 8 defined zones can have its own occupancy status.
  • Real-time position tracking: The detected people's positions and movements can be displayed on the map in the Aqara app.
  • Real-time people count: The number of people currently detected by the radar can be displayed. In multi-person scenarios, the manufacturer states that a deviation of 1–3 people may occur, so the function is more suitable for tracking occupancy trends than for precise access counting.
  • Moving and stationary status: The system can distinguish whether detected people are moving or whether all of them are stationary.
  • Entry and exit detection: An automation event can be triggered when the first person enters or the last person leaves the overall area or a specific zone.
  • Left/right entry and exit: In left-right detection mode, entering or leaving from the left or right side can be handled as separate events.
  • Approaching and moving away: The sensor can detect when someone approaches or moves away from the device or a defined zone.
  • Adjustable approach distance: Approach thresholds of 1, 2, or 3 meters can be configured.
  • Presence detection sensitivity: The sensitivity of the entire monitored area can be adjusted to suit the environment.
  • Absence confirmation time: You can configure how long the overall area or a zone must be detected as empty before the “vacant” state is reported.
  • AI Spatial Learning: A learning process started in an empty room allows the device to map the radar environment and identify reflective or moving interference sources.
  • AI Enhanced Person Detection: When enabled, the algorithm attempts to identify moving non-human targets as interference.
  • Automatic interference detection: When possible interference sources are detected, the system can suggest marking them as interference areas.
  • Illuminance-based automation: Measured light level and presence status can be used together as automation conditions, for example to control lighting.
  • Duration-based automation: The occupied or vacant state of the entire area or a specific zone for a defined period can be used as an automation condition.
  • People-count-based automation: The number of detected people can be compared with a configured value and used as an automation condition.
  • Scheduled indicator light disablement: A period can be configured during which the status indicator remains off during normal operation.
  • OTA firmware updates: Firmware can be updated through the Aqara app.
  • Protocol switching: Switching between Zigbee and Thread/Matter operation requires re-pairing. Changing the protocol clears the device configuration and stored data.

  • Mounting: Depending on the accessories included in the kit, the device can be installed using adhesive, magnetic mounting, or screws.
  • PS-S05D package: The Aqara Brand Retail version includes the device, mounting bracket, USB-C to USB-C cable, metal plate, adhesive pad, screw set, and documentation.
  • Reflective surfaces: Large glass, mirror, stainless steel, and smooth ceramic surfaces can cause radar reflections. These should preferably be marked as boundaries on the detection map.
  • Distance between people: For more reliable separation of multiple people, approximately 1 m or more is recommended. At shorter distances, radar point clouds may overlap.
  • Distance from walls and windows: The manufacturer recommends approximately 0.5 m or more between the detected person and large reflective surfaces to reduce position jumps and ghost targets.
  • AI person detection limitations: Children shorter than approximately 1.4 m and people in a crawling position may under certain conditions be classified as non-human targets. In such environments, AI Enhanced Person Detection should be configured with this limitation in mind.
  • Static presence detection: The radar uses signals generated by breathing and other micro-movements. At long distances, near the edge of the field of view, or with a very still sleeping person, a longer absence confirmation time and higher sensitivity may be required.
  • Illuminance measurement: The light sensor is primarily intended for monitoring ambient light intensity and changes for automation purposes; the manufacturer does not define it as a professional lux meter.
  • Third-party Matter platforms: The actual features available depend on the Matter implementation of the specific platform. Detailed zone settings and AI parameters must be configured in the Aqara app.
