Details

The Aeotec Home Energy Meter 8 (ZWA046C3A60) is a Z-Wave 800 Series three-phase energy meter supplied with three 60 A current transformers.

The device measures the current of all three phases using current transformers installed in the electrical distribution board, while mains voltage is detected through its own power supply wires. Based on the measured data, it can provide instantaneous power, energy, voltage, current, reactive power, and power factor values, among others.

The three current transformers, each with a 60 A measurement range, are suitable for monitoring three-phase 230/400 V electrical systems with a neutral conductor. Measurement is performed without interrupting the circuit: the current transformers must be clamped around the phase conductors being measured. The device can handle consumed energy and energy exported back to the grid separately.

The Home Energy Meter 8 uses Z-Wave Plus V2 and Z-Wave 800 Series technology for data communication. It supports traditional Z-Wave mesh communication, Z-Wave Long Range, SmartStart inclusion, and S2 encryption. It can be used with Home Assistant, SmartThings, Homey, FIBARO, and other compatible Z-Wave hubs.

About Aeotec

Aeotec develops smart home controllers, Z-Wave and Zigbee adapters, sensors, switching modules, energy meters, and SmartThings-compatible devices. Its product range includes battery-powered sensors, mains-powered actuators, gateways, and modules designed for professional installation.

Aeotec Z-Wave products can be used with various open and commercial control systems. The actual measurement data, configuration parameters, and automation options available depend on the Z-Wave hub and its device support.

Key Product Features

  • Z-Wave 800 Series and Long Range: The device uses Z-Wave 800 Series radio hardware and supports Z-Wave Long Range communication when paired with a compatible controller.
  • Single-phase and three-phase energy measurement: The Home Energy Meter 8 product family is designed for measuring single-phase and three-phase electrical systems. This version includes three 60 A current transformers.
  • Energy consumption and generation measurement: The device handles imported and exported energy separately, making it suitable for monitoring photovoltaic energy production.
  • Per-phase measurement: Data from the three current transformers can be reported separately and as aggregated values to the control system.
  • Measurement of multiple electrical parameters: Supported reports include active energy, instantaneous power, voltage, current, apparent energy, reactive power, reactive energy, and power factor.
  • Non-invasive measurement: The split-core current transformers are installed around the phase conductors, so the full load current does not pass through the meter electronics.
  • S2 encryption: Z-Wave communication can be protected using S2 security classes.
  • SmartStart inclusion: With a compatible Z-Wave controller, the device can be pre-added to the network using its QR code or DSK identifier.
  • Z-Wave repeater: Due to its continuous mains power supply, it can forward the traffic of other Z-Wave devices in a traditional Z-Wave mesh network.
  • IP44 protection: The enclosure is protected against solid objects larger than 1 mm and splashing water from multiple directions.

Smart Home Protocols and Platform Compatibility

  • Z-Wave Plus V2: The device is Z-Wave Plus certified, and the European version operates in the 868 MHz Z-Wave frequency range.
  • Z-Wave 800 Series: An eighth-generation Z-Wave device based on the EFR32ZG23 radio chipset.
  • Z-Wave mesh: Operates as a router and repeater in a traditional Z-Wave network.
  • Z-Wave Long Range: Supports a direct star-topology connection with a compatible Long Range controller. In Long Range mode, it does not communicate through mesh routes.
  • S2 Security: Supports encrypted S2 inclusion and data communication.
  • S0 Security: Support for the earlier S0 security class is also available.
  • SmartStart: Supports SmartStart network inclusion using a QR code and DSK code.
  • Home Assistant: Can be integrated using a compatible Z-Wave USB adapter managed by Z-Wave JS or Z-Wave JS UI. Per-phase consumption, generation, and total measurement data may appear as separate entities.
  • Z-Wave JS UI: Can be used for traditional Z-Wave mesh inclusion and, with a suitable controller, for Z-Wave Long Range inclusion.
  • Samsung SmartThings: With an Aeotec Smart Home Hub and an appropriate SmartThings Edge Driver, per-phase and total power and energy data can be managed.
  • Homey: Listed as compatible with Homey Bridge, Homey Pro 2023, and Homey Pro 2026.
  • FIBARO: Listed as compatible with FIBARO Home Center 3 and Home Center 3 Lite.
  • Local communication: When used with a locally operated Z-Wave hub, measurement data can be transmitted over the local Z-Wave network.

Smart Features

  • Instantaneous power measurement: The device reports current consumption and generation power in watts.
  • Consumed energy measurement: Electrical energy consumption is accumulated in kilowatt-hours.
  • Exported energy measurement: Energy and power exported to the grid can be handled as separate measurement values.
  • Per-phase data: Separate consumption and generation values may be available for each of the three current transformers.
  • Aggregated measurement data: The control system can display the algebraic sum of the three phases and the net consumption or generation value of the entire system.
  • Voltage measurement: The device reports mains voltage in volts.
  • Current measurement: Current measured by the current transformers is reported in amperes.
  • Power factor: Power factor is included among the supported Z-Wave measurement reports.
  • Reactive power measurement: The device can also report reactive power and reactive energy data.
  • Energy data logging: Storage and graphical display of measurement history are provided by the Z-Wave hub or smart home platform in use.
  • Energy-based automations: Automations can be triggered based on defined power consumption, surplus solar generation, or daily energy use.
  • Remote display: When used with a cloud-connected hub, measurement values may also be available remotely.

  • Three-phase measurement: The three current transformers are used to measure the individual phases separately, while the control system may handle total consumption as an aggregated value.
  • Photovoltaic systems: Bidirectional measurement data can be used to monitor local consumption, energy generation, and energy exported to the grid.
  • Radio placement: A metal electrical distribution enclosure may reduce Z-Wave radio range.
  • Package contents: Home Energy Meter 8 measuring unit, 3 × 60 A current transformers, mounting accessories, and user guide.
