Details

The Aeotec Door Window Sensor 8 (ZWA055-C) is a Z-Wave 800 Series door and window, tilt, temperature, and humidity sensor.

The device uses a built-in reed sensor to monitor the position of the included magnet and reports whether a door or window is open or closed. The integrated three-axis sensor can also detect changes in tilt, making it suitable for monitoring tilt-and-turn windows, roof windows, and garage doors.

The Door Window Sensor 8 also measures temperature and relative humidity. Based on the measured values, it calculates the dew point and can report a mould risk warning when humidity levels are high. The opening status and environmental data can be used in heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, and security automations.

The device supports Z-Wave 800 Series hardware, Z-Wave Plus Long Range communication, S2 encryption, and SmartStart inclusion. It can be powered by one CR14250 battery or a 5 V USB-C power supply. It is compatible with Home Assistant, SmartThings, Homey, FIBARO, and other compatible Z-Wave systems.

About Aeotec

Aeotec develops smart home controllers, Z-Wave and Zigbee adapters, sensors, switching modules, energy meters, and SmartThings-compatible devices. Its product range includes battery-powered sensors, mains-powered actuators, gateways, and modules designed for professional installation.

Aeotec Z-Wave products can be used with various open and commercial control systems. The measurement data, configuration parameters, and automation options actually available depend on the Z-Wave hub and its device support.

Key Product Features

  • Open and closed detection: The built-in reed sensor monitors the position of the included magnet and reports whether a door or window is open or closed.
  • Tilt detection: The integrated three-axis sensor can detect position changes of approximately 5°.
  • Temperature measurement: The device provides temperature readings within a range of -10 to +60 °C.
  • Humidity measurement: The built-in sensor measures relative humidity from 0 to 98%.
  • Dew point calculation: The dew point calculated from temperature and humidity data may appear as a separate measurement value in compatible control systems.
  • Mould risk warning: Based on humidity and dew point data, the device can indicate environmental conditions that may promote mould growth.
  • Tamper protection: Tamper status can be handled as a separate security event in a compatible Z-Wave system.
  • Two power supply options: Can be powered by one CR14250 battery or a 5 V USB-C power supply.
  • Z-Wave Long Range: With a compatible controller, the device can use a direct Long Range connection with extended radio coverage.
  • Compact design: The 70 × 18 × 19 mm sensor can be mounted using adhesive tape or screws.

Smart Home Protocols and Platform Compatibility

  • Z-Wave Plus Long Range: The device can be used in both traditional Z-Wave mesh and Z-Wave Long Range networks, provided that the hub supports the selected communication mode.
  • Z-Wave 800 Series: An eighth-generation Z-Wave sensor based on the EFR32ZG23 radio chipset.
  • S2 Security: Inclusion and data communication can be protected with S2 encryption.
  • SmartStart: With a compatible hub, the device can be pre-added to the Z-Wave network using its QR code or DSK identifier.
  • Home Assistant: Can be used with a compatible Z-Wave adapter through Z-Wave JS or Z-Wave JS UI.
  • Samsung SmartThings: Can be integrated using an Aeotec Smart Home Hub and a suitable SmartThings device handler.
  • Homey: Listed as compatible with Homey Bridge, Homey Pro 2023, and Homey Pro 2026.
  • FIBARO: Listed as compatible with FIBARO Home Center 3 and Home Center 3 Lite.
  • Z-Wave.Me: Listed as compatible with Z-Wave.Me UZB and Z-Station controllers.
  • Direct Z-Wave association: Through supported association groups, selected events can be sent directly to other Z-Wave devices.
  • Local communication: When used with a locally operated Z-Wave hub, sensor and measurement data can be handled over the local network.

Smart Features

  • Open and closed status: The connected system can display whether the door or window is open or closed.
  • Tilt-and-turn window detection: Tilt sensing can be used to distinguish between open, closed, and tilted positions.
  • Reversible magnetic logic: A configuration parameter can reverse whether the near or far magnet position corresponds to the open state.
  • Opening-based automation: Opening a door or window can trigger lighting, an alarm, heating shutdown, or another automation.
  • Tilt-based automation: The tilted state can be used as a separate event for ventilation or security workflows.
  • Temperature display: Measured temperature can be logged and displayed in charts by the control system.
  • Humidity display: Relative humidity data can be used as a condition for ventilation and dehumidification automations.
  • Dew point reporting: The calculated dew point can be transmitted as a separate sensor value in compatible systems.
  • Mould risk status: The device can report conditions suitable for mould growth when the configured criteria are met.
  • High temperature alarm: An upper temperature threshold can be configured to trigger an event or direct Z-Wave command.
  • Low temperature alarm: A lower temperature threshold can also be configured.
  • High humidity alarm: A separate event can be sent when the configured upper humidity threshold is reached.
  • Low humidity alarm: A lower humidity threshold can also be configured.
  • Measurement threshold configuration: The temperature or humidity change required to trigger a new report can be configured.
  • Periodic reports: The interval for regular transmission of measurement and status data can be adjusted.
  • Temperature calibration: A correction value can be applied to the measured temperature.
  • Humidity calibration: A correction value can also be applied to the measured relative humidity.
  • Tamper status: A tamper event can trigger a notification or security automation.
  • Battery level: Remaining battery capacity can be displayed as a percentage in compatible systems.
  • Low battery threshold: The charge level at which a battery replacement warning is sent can be configured.
  • LED indication configuration: LED behaviour for reports, status changes, tamper events, and other events can be configured separately.

Power Supply and Operation

  • Battery power: Operates with one 3 V, 1500 mAh CR14250 lithium battery.
  • Expected battery life: The manufacturer specifies approximately four years of operation.
  • USB-C power supply: The device can also be powered by a 5 V USB-C power supply.
  • Battery-powered inclusion: When included while running on battery power, it operates as a sleeping Z-Wave device and communicates only when reporting or waking up to reduce energy consumption.
  • USB-C-powered inclusion: When included while powered through USB-C, it operates as an always-available Z-Wave device, while the battery can be used as a backup power supply.
  • Power source status: The device can report whether it is using battery or USB-C power.
  • Wake-up function: During battery operation, the sensor wakes up at regular intervals to receive queued configuration commands from the hub.
  • Manual wake-up: A short press of the device button wakes it for approximately 15 seconds.
